Recreation DivisionThe goal of the Worcester Youth Soccer Recreational Program is to provide children the opportunity to play soccer in a supportive and rewarding atmosphere, regardless of the individual child's ability. The first and foremost goal is to have fun, while developing soccer skills, building sportsmanship, and encouraging a lifelong love of the game. Play at this level is designed to improve balance and coordination, increase social skills, and encourage problem solving. All games at the recreational level are non-results orientated. This means scores are not recorded nor are standings kept. Play at this level is designed to focus completely on player development.
All children, regardless of ability, are given play time during each game and encouraged to improve at their own rate. We at WYSL want all children to love going to practices and games and most importantly, return season after season.
Each child will need shin guards, cleats, black shorts, a soccer ball (size requirements below), and a water bottle. Team shirts and socks are provided by the league. Jewelry and metal hair clips may not be worn during practice or at games. All teams are coed up to U10 where boys and girls are put on separate teams. The individual team coaches set the practice days, times and locations. All parents should expect to hear from the child’s coach by April 10.
Age Groups
U6The Under 6 and age group plays with a # 3 ball. All games are played at Forest Grove School with 3 v 3 players on 2 side by side fields. There are no goal keepers at this age, nor do they keep score. The main skills these children are taught are:
- Dribble with all sides of both feet
- Dribble out of trouble
- Dribble past someone
- Soft first touch
U7 & U8The Under 7 and Under 8 age groups also play with a # 3 ball, 4 v 4 on 2 side by side fields without goalies and no score kept. All games are played at Forest Grove School. In addition to building on the skills learned while in the U6 age group, the following skills are worked on:
- Shielding
- Proper shooting techniques
- Passing skills
U10The Under 10 age group moves up the #4 ball and games are played at Clark Street School. The games are played on one field 6 v 6 including a goal keeper. Additionally, girls and boys are put on separate teams. The new skills introduced to children within this age group include:
- Passing with the inside and outside of both feet
- Shooting with both feet, using laces
- Receiving the ball with all parts of the body
- Heading
U12+There currently is not a U12 recreation league, though should the interest arise with adequate numbers of U12 children, the feasibility of starting a U12 recreation division will be investigated. There are Travel U10 – U18 teams. Please see the travel league page for more information.

WHAT
WYSL has entered into an exciting partnership with REAL Fútbol Training, http://www.realfutboltraining.com/aboutus.html. This outstanding organization will serve to direct each Academy, educate our coaches and help create a curriculum that will help our players excel at the game. This program is specifically designed to promote individual player development. At this level, the results that matter to the league have nothing to do with the team’s score in their weekend games. We want to see all the players having fun and learning the fundamental skills of soccer. Our hope is that they will develop a lifelong appreciation for and love of the game.
WHEREAll Academy training will be held at the Forrest Grove/McGrath school fields, 495 Grove Street.
